The Power Air Fryer XL
My Full Hands On Review

A few months ago I was in the same position at you.. I wanted to make sure that the Power Fryer XL lived up to the hype before spending my hard earned money.

The reviews I read online were written by somebody who clearly hadn’t even used it before!

I wanted to know if the Power Fryer XL was as good as everyone was saying. So I bought one and tested it for you!

I just didn’t trust what they were saying.

I want to save you the guesswork, so I’ve bought, tested and photographed it for a hands on Power Fryer XL review.

Things to consider before buying a Large Air Fryer

The Power Fryer XL is designed to cook for 4 to 6 people.

A standard air fryer is made for 3 to 4 people.

How many people do you have in your household?

The large capacity air fryer is ideal for bigger households.

If your household is 4 to 6 people I’d highly recommend picking a large air fryer

The frying basket is 2 quarts bigger than a standard air fryer basket, providing us with that extra portion space.

However if you’re a couple, or just 3 of you, you’ll probably be fine with just a standard sized air fryer.

Do you sometimes have guests to feed?

If my kids friends come over, being able to toss in another portion removes (some) of the stresses of having surprise guests!

Previously, with the standard size air fryer, I've had to do 2 seperate cooks!

What a waste of time and electricity this is.

It’s the same for my friends. I’m happy to know I have a game plan to feed them without having to adjust our cooking plans.

Do you have space for it?

An air fryer with a larger basket capacity will have a larger footprint.

If you have a small kitchen or are already tight for space, it might be worth settling for a regular sized air fryer.

If you’re fortunate to have a larger kitchen with plenty of kitchen surface, the extra space needed won’t really impact you. I was lucky enough to fall into this category.

I would recommend having a designated space for your air fryer. Needing to move it after each cook just encourages damage.

You’re also likely to use the fryer less due to the inconvenience of putting it in place each time.

Would you like to prepare meals for the following day?

Cooking an extra portion for my husband to take to the office the next day is a real time and money saver.

It certainly beats a carb filled sandwich I would usually make him and much cheaper than him spending money on a takeaway lunch somewhere.

Sometimes I freeze (and label) another portion to be defrosted at a strategic time in the future!

Power Air Fryer XL Extra Large Cooking Capacity

Do you prefer larger portions?

We try to eat healthily around our table, with portion control being a part of that.

However there are some meals where the fried part needs to be a bigger part of the plate.

With my smaller air fryer, 2 rounds of frying would be required which might delay dinner.

A larger air fryer gets us around this ‘2 batches’ problem.

The Power Fryer XL Review

The Power Fryer XL gives you all the advantages of a standard air fryer, but with even more cooking space.

If you already own a standard size air fryer you already know the pain of trying to squish extra portions into the basket.

The food doesn’t get nearly as crispy and it seems to mess with the cooking time!

The extra larger fryer has saved me from that.

For those not familiar with air fryers in general, they have transformed the way I cook in my kitchen.

positives
Huge 5.3 quart basket
Intuitive touch screen controls
Includes a divider to keep 2 types of food at once
7 presets for common foods
Surprisingly affordable
negatives
Take up more space than your average air fryer
Additional accessories need to be purchased separately
Only comes with a 1 year warranty as standard

You can fry food with much less oil that a conversional fryer, saving calories and fat intake.

At the same time, keeping that crispy finish that you get with your regular fryer.

The XL size is perfect for larger families who want to cook with less oil, and prepare meals from fresh ingredients.

It’s also well suited for a family of 4 who enjoy generous portions, or those wanting to prepare extra portions for the next day.

It’s not a good choice for single people or couples, or those with very small kitchens. A regular or small air fryer would be better suited for you headcount and available space.

Also.. if you want to consume lots of oil for some unknown reason.. an air fryer definitely isn’t for you!

The Capacity

The main reason you’re shopping for an extra large air fryer is for all that extra frying capacity!

Well then, I have good news for you.

As you can see, the 5.3 quart basket is nice and roomy.

I’ve been told you can fit an entire chicken into this thing!!

However it’s not something I plan to try..

Compared to the standard 3.5 or 4 quart basket, you can easily see how the extra portions will fit.

Thinking about it.. some of my recipes on my blog wouldn’t be possible without this extra large basket.

This goes to show that if you want to pick up a random recipe online you’re in a better position to have an extra large basket in your disposal.

It’s worth mentioning that there are air fryers with even larger baskets out there, however the footprint of the air fryer also gets bigger.

To me this is a good balance between basket space and taking up room on my kitchen side.

Power AirFryer XL Controls

The controls on an air fryer are crucial to make your cooks hassle free and accurate to the recipe.

The last thing you want is undercooked food due to cool controls, or added dinner time stress trying to get the settings to work!

I'm pleased to report that the controls on the powerfry xl are very simple and intuitive.

I’ve made you a quick run through of the basic functions that will get you going on your first cook.

How to turn the air fryer on

When you first plug it into the mains just 1 button is illuminated, which is the power button.

If you touch this, the rest of the touch screen springs to life.

Touch is again, and the display powers down.

See, I told you it was simple!

Once the display has fired up, you can see some more buttons.

How to set the temperature

On the right there is the temperature control buttons.

Simply tap on either plus or minus and watch the temperature setting change.

The temperature range available on this air fryer are 180 to 400 degrees fahrenheit.

This is wide enough to accommodate 99.9% of recipes you will find in recipes books or on blogs on the web.

Setting the cook time

Simply tap the plus or minus to change the length of the cook.

Helpfully the timing is in steps of 1 minute, all the way upto 60 minutes.

This allows you the cooking precision that you need and the range to follow any recipe that you might find.. Including all of mine!

The Presets

On most air fryers you’ll find a preset feature.

A preset features is essentially this is a set mode for cooking certain types of food.

It will save you a lot of guesswork and repetition for cooking commonly fried foods.

You’re less likely to over of undercook something and spend 5 minutes trying to figure out what temperature is needed and for how long!

What presets does it come with?

The Power AirFryer XL comes with 7 built in presets. These are:

French Fries, Roast, Shrimp, Bake, Chicken, Steak, and Fish.

You can access these different modes by pressing the ‘M’ button as seen on the screen.

Once pressed, an icon will light up to show which preset is selected

Press the ‘M’ button again to loop through them all one by one, stopping on the preset you want to cook with.

Some more expensive air fryers offer a feature of adding your own presets. This is extra handy for saving the settings of your family's favourite dishes.

Sadly this is one of the few things to the Power AirFryer XL is missing.

If the manufacturer is reading this.. pretty please consider adding this feature to the next model :)

How well does it fry?

I think it’s fair to say that Power AirFryer XL fries food just as well as any other air fryer I’ve tried.

With just a drop of oil I’ve been getting super crispy results in much less time than a conventional frier.

The extra basket space actually came in useful even though I was just trialing a few items, as it’s much easier to get the food in and out of the basket.

Photo results

Here is a picture I took of the Salmon I cooked with the Power AirFryer XL:

As you can see, it was cooked perfectly.. and I got a thumbs up from around the table.

After all, that’s the main aim!

The Basket

The basket itself is feels well made. I can’t imagine I'll be having maybe problems with in down the line.

It was a couple of interesting features that you should be aware of.

Safe eject button

There is a clever slidey cover which protects the button which releases the basket from the bottom of the frier itself.

This has already saved me a few times already!

Dropping the bottom section of the frier on the floor and does not make for a curse-free dinner preparation!

Non stick coating

The coating of the basket is protected with a coating with encourages the food to make it to your plate, rather than sticking to the side of the basket!

It’s not foolproof but it certainly helps.

The basket is also dishwasher safe, so even if some of your dish does get stuck, you won’t have to scrub away at it by hand.

Leading nicely on...

The Clean Up

Cleanup is seldom mentioned in reviews.. I guess the person reviewing isn’t always the one who needs to clean up!

Dishwasher safe

The dishwasher safe nature of the basket does save me some time (and elbow grease).

Throwing the basket into the dishwasher with the rest of the plates and cutlery removes any hesitation to put the air fryer on.

I wouldn’t recommend buying an air fryer which doesn’t have a dishwasher safe basket.

Basket Housing

The basket housing of the fryer collects any bits of food which fall through the basket.

The basket itself needs to have holes in it to allow the hot air to flow through.

It’s important to clear this out between each cook, as it stops the bits of food getting too ingrained into the metal, and helps avoid any leftover remnants catching on fire!

Accessories

The Power AirFryer XL comes with just 2 accessories.

This is probably expected in the lower end of the market, however additional accessories are available to purchase separately.

The Basket Divider

I use the basket divider frequently.

It’s used to separate the basket in 2 sections so you can cook 2 different foods at the same time, without them spoiling each other.

This is ideal for separating chicken and fish, for example. Otherwise you might want to do 2 separate cooks which isn’t a great use of your time.

Cake Tray

I haven’t had a chance to use the tray yet, however I thought you’d like to know that it comes for free!

I supposed it goes into the basket to make it shallower and to stop any of the mixture falling through.

If I get around to trying it out I'll let update this review.

What are other people saying?

I was interested to see what other people thought of the Power AirFryer XL.

There are a lot of reviews out there, but I’ve tried to find people who’ve actually used it.. rather than people who just made a review without the product.

They seem to align with my findings which I was pleased to see.

PowerFryer XL Alternatives

The PowerFryer XL isn’t the only large air fryer on the market.

It’s a great choice but there may be another option which is better suited to your needs.

Phillips Air Fryer XL

The original air fryer brand has a good offering in the XL market.

Phillips is known to make quality products in various markets, so it might suit someone who prefers to stick with age old brand, who don’t mind spending quite a bit more

Phillips Air Fryer XL From the original air fryer brand

It’s worth noting that the basket is a little smaller than the Power AirFryer XL so you might have to reduce your portion size by 1.

The key feature here is the smart reset button which can learn the meals you cook and save the settings for future use.

COSORI Air Fryer 5.8 Quart

The basket is the COSORI is huge! Even bigger than the Power Fryer XL.

This is perfect for even bigger families who need to max out their portions for each cook.

COSORI Air Fryer 5.8 Quart XL with a 2 year warranty

The square basket is something that makes me fond of the COROSRI. It feels like there is less wasted space than the curved corners, providing even more frying space.

It also comes with a 2 year warranty with is a nice bonus.

GoWISE USA 5.8-Quart

The GoWISE is great for more stylish homes who love to color match.

It’s available in various different colors rather than just black.

Personally the color of my air fryer doesn’t concern me too much, however I know it’s a hot subject for some people!

It comes with a neat shake reminder function too, which prompts you to save the basket half way through the cooking. This helps reduce the sticking to the side of the basket.

My Conclusion

Cooking healthy meals for your family can be a chore. Reducing oil when cooking is a step towards that, which the air fryer is great at.

The next issue is being able to cook for enough positions to keep everyone happy.

This is where the XL air fryer comes in.
